As you walk along Girdwood Road you will see the plants in the verges start to emerge. You will recall part of these verges were replaced with wildflower turf in 2021 and this year the rest were completed by Wandsworth Council’s team at Enable – the not for profit company who undertook the work. You may be interested to know the turf comprises thirty two native wildflowers and two non–invasive grasses. It is supplied by Wildflower Turf Ltd. The plants are grown on a mesh. In earlier years it was not fully biodegradable but more recently it is. Wildflower Turf Ltd have provided the wildflower turf for many councils & developments, including some prestigious ones, eg ‘The Hive’ at Kew has the same turf as us! There is a full list of the plants below – I’m looking forward to seeing them emerge. A quick search of these plants gives a fascinating insight into their stories; some are used in medicine and folklore, all are loved by insects, some have even feen found in British fossils tens of thousands of years old, so sharing a small part of our space with them – since many have declined in numbers – seems fitting. I’m looking forward to seeing them emerge!’
(Thank you Annette. Maybe residents will be inspired to have a wildflower turf area in their own garden?) Item from ‘Reaching out to Residents’ March/April 2024
